Thinking of Becoming a Door Supervisor?
The Door supervisor is the first person a customer sees as they approach a venue. The
impression you make at that first encounter often decides if a customer will ever return to that venue, so you need
to be able to greet them in a friendly yet professional manner. You then need to decide if that person is suitable for the
venue. In an ideal world, the customer is sober and polite and you are able to wish him/her a pleasant evening and allow
admittance. Sometimes however this will not be the case. Occasionally you will have to turn a customer away. The customer may
become abusive and start hurling insults directed at you or other staff and customers. On even rarer occasions
they may threaten physical harm and in exceptional cases they may actually resort to violence. You need to be able to deal
with situations like this one minute, and then go back to meeting and greeting the next customer with a big smile on your
face. You need to be able to remain calm and focused when everyone around you is becoming excitable, and make decisions based
on rational thoughts and not emotions. If you believe you can do this, and still want to be a door supervisor, please read
on.
What do i need to become a door supervisor?
Since June 2005 it has been a criminal offence to work as a door Supervisor without a licence issued
by the Security Industry Authority. To get a licence from the S.I.A, you must first complete an approved training course.
This course, known as the Level 2 National Certificate for Door Supervisors, is usually run over four days and is
normally broken down into two main parts. The first part deals with the roles and responsibilities
of a Door Supervisor and involves topics such as behavioural standards, customer service skills, the law in relation to licensing,
arrest procedures and report writing to name a few. The second part of the course deals with conflict management and communication
skills and revolves around the principles of recognising and defusing/resolving conflict. Having successfully completed and
passed the qualification, you then need to apply to the S.I.A. for your License. This currently costs £245.00 which is payable
directly to the S.I.A. at the time of application and is non refundable. If you meet the required criteria you will be issued
a license in the form of a badge which lasts for three years. The process for renewing badges is still under discussion.
